Title
Talking Architecture 02
Description
The second edition of Talking Architecture was held in June 2014, as part of the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale, in the Conservatorio di Musica “Benedetto Marcello” di Venezia.
Materiality and space are fundamental properties of architecture. Both the final materiality and the space created by it are a reflection of the cultural conditions in which architecture is framed. Because of this, understanding the relationship between these two elements allows us to comprehend and illuminate the values of contemporary society regarding the construction of its habitat.
Nowadays, the availability of so many innovative products and materials together with their advanced application techniques, is changing the essence of space in architecture. Also, the use of innovative computer design tools let architects imagine, and above all, make possible, any space they want to build regardless of its complexity.
Debate, in order to question, contribute to and evaluate the relationships between materiality and architectural space were the aim of this second edition of Talking Architecture: Fundació Sorigué, with the participation of five internationally recognized architects and intellectuals: Mark Wigley, Ole Bouman, Nathalie de Vries, Iñaki Ábalos and Chris Dercon.
This Talking Architecture: Fundació Sorigué were event programed within the 14th International Architecture Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia, curated by Rem Koolhaas and which, under its title of Fundamentals, had as its goal the analysis of architecture’s main elements from 1914 to 2014.
It was therefore a good moment to deal with two of architecture’s inherent elements, such as materiality and space, within the reflective theoretical framework proposed by the curator of this edition of la Biennale di Venezia.
At the same time the three themes of place, time and energy, that were dealt with in the first Talking Architecture held in 2013 in PLANTA (Lleida, Spain) were picked up again.
